What makes a great case study?

The story you write and how it unfolds is what keeps your reader interested.

At the root is your customer’s story that tells how you solved their business problem.

There are 3 elements in a case study: people, a problem, and a solution. Without the people, there is no problem to solve and no story to tell. Stories are about people using a product or service to help them accomplish tasks, become more efficient in their work, or grow their business beyond where it is at the present.

When there is a problem, people want a solution to make the pain go away.

You could begin with once there was a business and continue. The case study is a process of discovery, one that takes the reader through the customer’s problem to how the solution, your solution, solved the problem. It also describes what the outcomes were, as a result.

The struggle may be due to changing circumstances in the business such as growth, which is a good problem to have. It could be with an increase in purchase orders, better processes to handle the added customer base. Or it could be that the current tools, processes, or ways of working, just don’t work anymore.

Your customer who is looking for a solution may need a better tool to organize their customers, to keep track of inventory, or to update to new methods for sales in reaching out to customers.

Whatever their problem, they need your solution to solve their issue.

The case study captures in a short presentation how your product or service provided the solution that your customer is eager to share,

The good news about a case study is it serves as advertising for both customer and for you, the solution provider. Whether providing the means for efficiencies, better communication, accounting, reorganization the space, advertising, the case study speaks volumes for your product or service.
